The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) has the public responsibility of managing one of the largest and the most successful stadiums in Australia and the world - the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The MCG is more than just a stadium, it's an Australian icon and a meeting place for generations past, present and future.

 

The MCG is host to more than 70 major events and attracts over three million visitors annually. The MCC is the largest sporting club in the country with over 155,000 members and also manages 13 MCC sporting sections with 2,600 participants. The MCG is also home to the Australian Sports Museum (ASM), which celebrates Australia's rich sporting history and culture, and is also managed by the MCC.

A newly created permanent position has become available for an experienced Legal Counsel to join our Finance & Business Performance team. Reporting to the General Manager, Finance & Business Performance, this role has responsibilities across a broad spectrum of corporate and commercial activities, enabling the MCC to achieve its strategic objectives within appropriate risk parameters, whilst ensuring compliance with relevant legal obligations and requirements.

 

The Legal Counsel's key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Providing counsel to executives and staff in a variety of legal areas, including commercial, employment law, contract, leasing, construction, insurance, safety and intellectual property
  • Communicating and negotiating with external parties (regulators, external counsel, public authorities, stakeholders) on behalf of the MCC on legal matters
  • Managing and mitigating organisational legal risks by designing and implementing company processes and procedures
  • Providing interpretation and research into relevant laws and work to ensure compliance with all laws and regulations that apply to the business
  • Maintaining current knowledge of changes in legislation
  • Building effective relationships throughout the business, designing legal solutions and processes that suit the culture and growth of the organisation
  • Solving complex matters with multiple stakeholders, resulting in strong outcomes for the organisation
  • Managing all legal requirements across the business including administrative legal needs and management of the legal budget
  • Liaising with external legal firms in relation to specialised legal services and follow up
  • Acting as Company Secretary for all associated entities across the Melbourne Cricket Club
  • Assisting and supporting tendering processes through the provision of legal advice

 

The successful candidate will have  5 + years' experience as a lawyer working in-house or or as a generalist, as well as a sound understanding and knowledge of commercial and corporate law with demonstrated ability to provide commercially focused advice.  They will be a trusted advisor that has the ability to communicate complex legal issues and risks in terms that non-legal colleagues can understand and are able to build and maintain strong professional relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.

 

Formal qualifications and experience must include:

 

  • Law degree
  • Active license to practice law in Australia
  • Strong legal drafting and negotiating skills
  • Sophisticated communication and presentation skills - capability to represent the company with external business leaders in complex legal matters
  • Strong attention to detail & highly developed communication skills both written and verbal
  • Capability to manage projects with limited supervision
